According to FEMA, the number of major disaster declarations since 2004 is 674 and growing. This is an increase of 35% compared to declared disasters between 1994 and 2004. Disaster declarations are on the rise and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has provided national recommendations for emergency food storage – we’ll detail their suggestions below along with our review of the company Food Insurance.
Food Storage, Survival Food, and Food Insurance
Chances are that you’ve seen one of these phrases describing various food kits designed for emergencies. Each phrase is referring to emergency food storage kits and sometimes you’ll even see the phrase bug out bag or long term food storage containers.
Bug Out Bags have been made popular by survivalists who coined the term to describe a light weight emergency kit that is contained within a backpack.
There’s no doubt that food storage is a good idea. In fact, FEMA recommends that each family have at minimum a 3-day storage of food and essential items to include:
– Water: One gallon per day per person (minimum 3 days)
– Battery powered or hand crank radio
– Flashlight and extra batteries
– First aid kit
– Whistle (to signal for help)
– Dust masks and plastic sheeting
– Moist towelettes, garbage bags and zip ties for sanitation
– Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
– Can opener for stored food
– Local map
This is a great starting point, but what happens if you need supplies for more than 3 days. You don’t need a huge national disaster to experience life without basic necessities. Moderate winter snow and ice storms can leave families without power for 7-14 days at a time. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes can destroy power supplies for weeks and that 3-day food supply just won’t cut it.
Please understand: I am not a survivalist or a doomsday prepper. I just know what it’s like to live without electricity for 14 days after a bad snow/ice storm hit Southern Missouri in 2007. The reality is that having a supply of food is something most people don’t consider.
